Diversity in a world of specialization.
In my opinion, art direction requires a diverse skillset. Art direction ultimately boils down to your ability to effectively communicate your ideas to creatives and strategists and your ability to understand their roles and capabilities. How can you effectively do this if you have no experience in their domain? If you can't speak their language or understand their pain points you can't be an effective leader.
